Research and Development serves as the major unit responsible for the administration,
promotion and coordination of the University's program for research and institutional
advancement. The Office implements the established priorities, goals and policies as defined in
the University's long-range strategic plan and maintains oversight responsibilities for the
implementation of the University's extramural and intramural research programs and related
incentives plans.

The Office of Technology Transfer (OTT) serves as the link between the commercial marketplace
and Auburn University faculty. OTT offers Auburn researchers expertise and guidance regarding
the protection of intellectual property, including patents and copyrights, and in seeking
licensing agreements with commercial entities to take Auburn research developments into the
marketplace for the public benefit.

The Office for Technology Transfer was established in 2006 to develop and implement an
integrated market-driven technology deployment plan that will facilitate commercialization of
intellectual property generated by UA faculty, staff and students, as well as contribute to
economic development in Western Alabama via UA start-up and spin-off ventures.

The responsibility of the UAB Research Foundation (UABRF) is to identify, assess, protect, and
market commercially viable intellectual property developed at The University of Alabama at
Birmingham. The UABRF reviews intellectual property disclosures submitted by UAB associates and
initiates steps to protect the rights of the discovery, including the filing of domestic and
foreign patents, when appropriate.
